This concert features the legendary Iranian Singer Shakila, Angel of Hearts, who performs her best songs in classical Persian music.  

The concert also features the beautiful and unique voice of Ziba Shirazi who will perform with American Jazz band directed by  Houston’s very own pianist and composer Dr. Jose-Miguel Yamal.

The Mehregan celebration also will host art exhibits from local artists.

The Beginnings and Traditions of Mehregan

Merhregan or Mehregan Feast (in Persian: Jashn-e-Mehregan) is an ancient Iranian autumn festival, observed on the 8th or 9th of October (which corresponds to Mehr day or the 16th of Mehr, the seventh month of the Iranian Calendar), and it is a celebration dedicated in honor of Mithra (Mitra) or Mehr, the Persian god of Light, Love, Knowledge, and Commitment.

There are many accounts as to the beginning of Mehregan.  A few, different versions are listed below:

• Mehregan is a day of victory when Angels helped Fereydoon and Kaveh become victorious over Zahak.  They imprisoned him in the Damavand Mountain where he died from his wounds.

• Mehregan is the day God gave light to the world, that had previously been dark.

• On this day Mashya and Mashyaneh (a concept of Semitic Adam and Eve) were created.

• On this day the sun was created.

Among all Iranian festivities, the two most important feasts were considered to be Norouz and Mehregan.

Catholic Studies Film Series Presents:

Movie: The Stoning of Soraya. M  فیلم سنگسار ثریا. میم

Sister Paula Jean Miller, Director of Catholic Studies will lead the discussion on Movie: The Stoning of Soraya. M," 7:30 p.m. Sunday Sept. 28, at the Doherty Library Room 009, after a viewing of the movie.

View and discuss the last film produced by Hollywood producer, Stephen McEveety shown on campus before his Oct. 10 Miller Lecture speech.

A screening of “The Stoning of Soraya M.,” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, in the Doherty Library Room 009, followed by a discussion with Director of Catholic Studies, Sr. Paula Jean Miller.

Premier viewing to be released in November.
